Sauna installation: what happens, and what your site provides

The three kinds of sauna installation compared honestly — indoor kit, assembled outdoor, prebuilt craned — with the site checklist and the crane-day sequence.

Sauna installation means three different jobs depending on what you buy. An indoor kit is built in place by a carpenter and an electrician. An outdoor flat-pack is assembled by you, on a base you prepare first. A prebuilt cabin arrives finished and is craned onto its foundation in hours. Most installation advice online describes the first job; most disappointment comes from applying it to the third.

This guide covers all three, then walks the prebuilt route in detail — because that is the one we build, and the one where the site, not the sauna, decides how the day goes.

The three kinds of sauna installation

An indoor kit goes into an existing room: framing, vapour management, interior boards, benches, and the heater circuit. The room needs ventilation and heat-tolerant surfaces, and the heater is the governing trade — it needs its own dedicated circuit, installed by a professional electrician, and possibly building and electrical permits (Jacuzzi’s own installation guide treats all three as essential). It is carpentry and electrics in place; treat the electrician as non-optional.

An assembled outdoor sauna — a barrel or panel kit — needs a base you prepare first (pavers, a slab, or a deck rated for the weight), then assembly. The kits are honest work, but the base, the power run, and the weatherproofing details are where they succeed or fail, and none of those come in the box.

A prebuilt cabin is finished at the factory — benches, heater, lighting, glazing already in — and the installation is a lift: foundation first, then the building, then commissioning. The work moves from your site to the production line, which is why the on-site time is measured in hours. The trade-off is the one nobody should hide from you: you need access for a crane, and the price reflects a finished building rather than a box of parts.

What install day looks like for a prebuilt cabin

Ours runs in a fixed sequence, and it is short enough to describe completely. The foundation is six reversible screw piles — no concrete, no excavation — driven in a morning, workable on slopes to 15°, with the lawn left as found minus six small discs. The cabin is craned onto the piles in under two hours. Commissioning follows: the heater’s first firing, the app connected, the handover walked through. The property trades throughout — there is no works compound, because there are no works.

That sequence is the same whether the building is a garden sauna or the anchor of a hotel’s wellness garden; a multi-building ground simply repeats it, base by base, in install waves.

What your site must provide

The cabin arrives complete. The site provides four things — check them before you order, from us or from anyone:

  1. Crane access on delivery day. The lift is the installation. Gate widths, overhead lines, and where the crane stands are the first questions worth answering — and where a crane genuinely cannot reach, the honest answer is no, and that conversation happens before any date is fixed.
  2. A power feed within reach. Our heater is a HUUM Drop 6 kW; the feed should be within about 6 m of the cabin, sized for the load, run by your electrician.
  3. Water, for the outdoor vestibule shower and whatever cold station you run beside the heat.
  4. Drainage — only if you add the bathroom. The sauna itself doesn’t need it; the NOOK 20 with a bathroom does.

The scope split, plainly, because vagueness here is how install week becomes an argument: the crane is hired locally and priced locally; power and water are run by your trades from the drawings we issue; our team commissions the building after the lift. Ask any supplier the same three questions — who contracts the crane, who runs the services, who commissions the heater — and get the answers in writing before a deposit. Why the foundation is piles, not a slab

A poured slab is permanent works: excavation, concrete, curing time, and a planning conversation that treats the building as permanent. Screw piles reverse all four: they install in a morning, reach 1.5–2.5 m embedment for stability in soft or seasonal ground, and unscrew at end of term with the site reinstated. For a landlord or a planning conversation, “fully removable” changes what is being asked for — an argument, not a guarantee, and never legal advice. Timeline, honestly

For our range: 8–10 weeks production for a single cabin (8–12 across a multi-building scope), routed by proximity from production lines in Europe and the U.S., then transit, then the install described above — the piles one morning, the lift under two hours on delivery day. What sets the calendar is never the install: it is production, and before that, your own consent and services timeline.
